Autism Lives Here: A Sunday ritual.
Pictures that give a glimpse into our life with autism. Pictures that may show how distinctly different our lives are from yours because of autism. Or pictures that may show how similar our lives are regardless of autism.
Visual Schedules. We couldn’t live without visual aids. People with autism tend not to learn through their auditory sense or by mirroring what they see (those damn mirror cells have been implicated in many a study about autism).
So visual aids come in handy to break down tasks that we all see as just one-stepped tasks- but in reality there are dozens if not hundreds steps in there that we don’t even think about. They can also just be one picture that reminds them of things- such as the “STOP” sign we have on our front door and our oven to remind Brian he isn’t supposed to open either without parents present.
Right now, in our home we are focusing hard on self-care tasks. Brian still needs a lot of assistance with these and it’s our personal goal for him to be as independent as possible.
