See Amazing in all Children: Sesame Street’s New Initiative

Today the online autism world blew up with the news of the launch of Sesame Street’s newest program: Sesame Street & Autism: See Amazing In All Children.

Why is this so exciting? Because Sesame Street is taking it upon themselves to introduce autism and differences to our youngest population.  They’re teaching children from the cradle, acceptance and empathy.  They’re having the conversations that sometimes parents don’t know how to explain. With autism being diagnosed at a rate of 1 in 68 children, this is an important conversation to have so children, like my Brian, can grow up in a world that is accepting of his differences.

It’s also amazing because my son can now watch videos of other kids like him.  He can watch a Sesame Street muppet, Julia, who has autism.  He is being represented.

The site has resources for parents as well.  For parent of children with autism, like daily routine cards we can use, and for parents of neurotypical children so they can understand autism and explain it to their children.  There’s even a resource labeled: “What to say to a parent of a child with autism.”

There is truly something for everyone at the website. I’m truly looking forward to watching where this initiative continues to grow and I want to send a huge thank you to the people over at Sesame Street.  Been a long time since a Sesame Street song has brought me to tears and given me goosebumps.
